Rigondeaux Upsets Donaire

It was a weekend for betting on sports as the much awaited fight of Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux finally took place in Radio City. I don’t know anyone who bet on sports who didn’t get excited for this boxing fight.

The fight started off with a lack of explosion due to Rigondeaux sticking to his plan to outbox and pick apart Donaire and he continued to dominate for the following rounds. Midway into the fight, Rigondeaux was making Donaire look like a boxer who was far from the one who won the boxer of the year award in 2012 and the best pound-for-pound fighter that he was tagged with. It was only in the tenth (10th) round that Donaire showed he is still a threat by knocking the former amateur star to the canvass. However, Rigondeaux was able to recover and got back into outplaying Donaire for the remainder of the round and of the fight.

Rigondeaux went on to win with a unanimous and ended Donaire’s years of successful run. The defeat poses some questions and some thoughts onto both fighters.

With regards to Rigondeaux, he showcased his talent onto this fight. However, as impressive as he is in outclassing elite fighter like Donaire, his style is far from entertaining and might be a hard sell for promoters.

On the other hand, there’s no doubt that Donaire can bounce back to boxing but as what has been displayed in this fight and some previous matches, he is ineffective against crafty fighters. If he truly wants to be elite, he needs to figure out how to fight against this style of boxers.
